About stationery and themes for messages

Stationery and themes are a set of unified design elements and color schemes you want to apply to messages. They specify fonts, bullets, background color, horizontal lines, images, and other design elements you want to include in outgoing e-mail messages.

In Microsoft Outlook, you choose from a predefined list of stationery or modify one of the patterns in the list to suit your needs. You can also create new stationery or download it from the Web. Outlook stationery is available only if you use HTML as your message format.

In a message that uses Microsoft Word as the editor, you choose from a list of stationery or themes. Word stationery includes all of the same patterns as Outlook stationery. Themes offer additional patterns not available in stationery. Word themes and stationery are available for messages in HTML format. Help with themes is available from Word when you create or open a message that uses the Word e-mail editor.

If you set a default stationery in Word, it sets the default in Outlook, too, and vice versa. Changes you make to stationery in Outlook will appear in that stationery in Word.

If you want to automatically add text to the e-mail messages you send, such as a boilerplate response to messages, use a signature in addition to the stationery or theme.
